Towers of Pizza

Location: Owey Island (West)
Grade: VD  -
Length: No length recorded
First ascent: P Smith, A Tees (19/9/99)
Route Description:
Probably the most obvious feature is a series of stepped towers connected to the clifftop by a short arete. This is well down towards the sea.Climb the first step by a wide corner crack on the right, and continue up taking care not to drop too many boulders on the second. Will be excellent at its grade, when the loose rock is cleared.

I can't remember if we did it in 2 pitches. It's quite possible that I allowed Alan to take over when it got really loose. I certainly didn't write the route description!

Hi Danny, hope you enjoyed the experience and it hasn't put you off climbing here. Will note your comments. And, Pete if its your route it's you name it what you like.

Haha cheers Pete - it was certainly an experience which will live long in the memory and the trousers! I have to agree with you on this route. I'd even suggest the last line in the description be removed next time round. But I suppose it was a good experience in hindsight! All the best, Danny.

Danny, sounds about right. It scared the willies out of me and Alan nearly got crushed under a falling rock. I originally called it "Leaning Tower of Pizza" and I don't quite know how the name got shortened to this. Personally, I don't see the point in this type of climbing... I think Alan might have hypnotised me or something.

If we did the correct route, which I'm pretty sure we did (climbs three prominent towers on the right looking out to sea not far from waters edge) then this is the most deathly route I've ever been on. Easy and good situations, but shockingly loose and 65 metres rather than 40? Not the type of route where traffic will clear the boulders. The last five metres from the arete is vertical mud with the occasional large boulder wedged in, so we got a rope lowered to that point. Be interested if anyone has a photo of the line to check. still loose, especially top few feet which are reminiscent of Swanage.
