Malin Head and AGM

Date: 06/10/12
Submitted by: Bill

Six of of us, with George in support, alas not climbing due to injury, spent the afternoon at Malin Head, prior to the AGM. Started off in Malin Laundry area and knocked off two or three short but enjoyable routes there. Thence to Stelfox Slab for an en masse abseil, followed by by a rising traverse  culminating in "Cutting Edge" ridge; Geoff later informed us this was the first ever rock climb in Ireland? On Malin? In the north? Whatever… it was a first and a superb experience on this day. Malin's answer to an Alpine ridge.

Later, McGrory's and the AGM: swift, efficient and convivial. Surely a first in the climbing world? New officers, good winter programmes, blah blah blah. Someone else will fill in the detail here. Afterwards, two great slide shows from Alan and Valli featuring some truly stunning photography (also both quite short, always a bonus).

Finally a huge thanks to Alan and Margaret for their unfailing hospitality, as ever.

That ridge gets done earlier and earlier, it was the 1930s when I heard last. Has anyone seen the ogham on the top?

Er, wots an ogham??

Such ignorance in one so young! Its ancient Irish writing that utilizes lines rather than letters. It is most often found carved on standing stones but has been found on outcrop rock and pieces of bogoak. I don't think it can yet be translated which suggests they may be early examples of AGM notes.

Ah! That'll be the rock I threw at Sandra. (Missed).

Ahh. Not only a gastronome and a conservationist but an archaeologist as well. Hope you're not insulted as I have paid my £30 and am not resigning!

Mate, you're the last person I would want to resign. You should have been the chair. Sorry that should read, you should have been A chair.

Sigh… I am now informed by our secretary that Geoff might take offence at the above. Let me make it plain I was suggesting that Alfie should have been an article of furniture and not an executive officer of the club. What a load of feckin wallflowers (you excepted, Alfie!).

At least you didn't call me a stool
