Pete Smith Hangs up Nuts After Twenty-hour Tryfan Trauma

Date: 22/23rd October 2005
Submitted by: Cymru Correspondent
It's official. Pete Smith, retiring Colmcille Club Secretary and climber of more than 20 years is giving it up for a sedentary life of bird-watching and botany, carpets slippers and a pipe.

The incident that brought about this surprising decision occurred on Tryfan in North Wales on the night of 22nd October. Pete and Anthony Feeney were ascending Grooved Arete and (let's allow Pete to take up the story) "a party of fellows (I hesitate to call them gentlemen) were climbing nearby and there was a lady in their group. I distinctly heard one of the men use foul language and I said to Tony 'If this is the sort of yob that goes climbing these days, then you can count me out.'"
