Rjukan, Norway

Alan asked me to submit a report. I feel myself overwhelmed by ennui…

So VERY briefly –

Alan and Andrew Tees, Sandra Kennedy and self went for 4 days to Rjukan for internationally renowned ice climbing.

Day 1 – nice Chinese in Newcastle, Co. Down as all flights out of Dublin cancelled due to high winds. Ah well…

Day 2 – Krokan area. Too many climbers, not enough ice. Still, we managed a creditable 4 or 5 routes. I personally suffered considerable humiliation involving chipped teeth, weak wrists, lost ice axes, and an “admiring” audience of Sandra’s friends from “Chicks Unleashed”. Ah, well…

Day 3 – Andrew and Sandra led a couple of fines lines in the Ozimosis area. I challenged a snow plough to a fight and lost heavily, resulting in no rear window for the rest of the trip in the hire car. Ah well…

Day 4 – Explored a new area for us: Kong Vinter, about 30 km from Rjukan. Terrifying abseil followed by hasty escape by only feasible route, led by the heroic and unflappable Tees senior. Finally made it to the café for tea and buns, a personal highlight. Can’t wait for next year
