Dawson Whyte Knuckle Ride * * *

Location: Eglish (The Gatepost)
Grade: VS  4c
Length: 45m
First ascent: A Tees, B Johnston (16/8/97)
Route Description:
Towards the LHS of the main Gatepost crag, locate a largely cleaned slab with a small tree at two-thirds height, on the left. Climb the slab to level with the tree, and move right off the slab and into crack system. Climb this using edge of flake on the right, until you are able to traverse left (thin), to gain central crack in the wall above. This is climbed using small edges, to a large slanting ledge. Move to RHS of ledge, and make an exposed move to gain the arete. Continue up on grooves and spikes, move left using undercut nose, and finish in corner with triangular standing stone.

Took a fall today while tryin to gain the arete above the ledge but composed myself again, great route, certainly terrified me at a few instances as was wet in patches, also tip for anyone attempting INSECT REPELLENT midges were awful

Tried to climb this last weekend but it was quite impossible with wet patch in the middle (rock becomes really slimy with no grip). Made a variation to it by going to the crack on the right, climbing over to a shelf and getting back to route above it. Still very scary with slimy wet patches on the way...

Climbed this yesterday. Great climb all the way on good gear. One of the best VS climbs that I have done. The moves into and up the central crack are superb. The three stars are well deserved.

Triangular stone in top corner appears to have be relocated! Harder than I remember, but just as good.

A great route and well protected, quite sustained climbing, a top end VS.

I think the grade was spot on and for single pitch one of the best i've done, and i've been climbing for 20 years. Thanks for the invite to meet up, though as i live on the east coast i only get over the odd time :(

climbed this yesterday with a young american lad and he said it was the best trad route he's done - brilliant

Pete - 08/03/2010
That implies that he's done better bolted routes?? Shome mishtake shurely?

Peter Cooper - 08/03/2010
Glad you put the feedback onto this line. How did you find it for the grade and how'd it compare to other 3 starred routes you've done? Where else have you and the young American climbed and intend to climb in Donegal? I'd also like to add that you can send an e-mail via the secretary, Anthony, if you want to meet-up with members of the CCC; if anybody's available there'll be there. Very happy to hear that his best trad route was found in Donegal!
