| Date: 02/09/07 Submitted by: Peter Cooper A ferry ride across the Swilly from Buncrana, Inishowen, found Alan, Margaret Tees and myself on the sunny shores of Rathmullan. Once there we met up with Andrew Tees, Dave Millar and holidaying Dave Porter (back over the water from Inverness, to see his folks in Castlederg). We got up to the crag via the bog road on its' western side, which is having serious improvments pending the construction of a wind farm; there's a serious chance of this place becoming a popular 'road-side' crag. First routes, 'Jammed Arete' & 'Geoff's Barely Contained Indifference' were in the gulley. Alan cleaned 'Great Corner' whilst these were led and was just in time get on the rope for 'Geoff's...', which Dave Millar had got the 2nd ascent of. A spot of top-roping was attempted on 'Heather Rogan' but it's getting too much dirt and water flowing down it to make it a worthwhile lead: at the moment. 'Great Corner' with the 'Cantabrian Crack' finish (overall grade HS) was done and enjoyed by 2 parties. This has to be one of the finest lines, at its' grade, in Ireland worth 3 stars (comments on the on-line guide welcome)! Alan led 'Springbok' after a quick clean, which is a fine line with a great finish up the headwall of the great slab. After that all that remained was to call for a beer and collect Margaret, who'd gone from the crag to Port Salon in a very fine time. The ferry stops, for this year, on the 16th of September. |
