Errigal NNE Ridge

Date: 1st Jan 2009
Submitted by: Columba McLaughlin

Aye, the usual annual trip to a favourite mountain in Donegal. Up bright and early to a wonderful bright sunshine and -5 celcius on the open road. There was no snow and the bog was freezing but the roads were clear. I met Tony Kelly and other members of the NWMC on the South East Carpark. But no - today was a day for a fine airy scramble on the NNE Ridge. So offski I went to the North Face carpark (if it exists).

I was on me own but saw two people descending. I had the whole ridge for myself. The rock was bone dry, the sun shone and there was a brilliant cloud inversion. The airy views were spectacular. I avoided a frontal assult on the berschung rock by a short crafty detour on the Eastern side. Nonetheless, I stuck rigidly to all airy positions. Absolute brill. One the summit I met the members of the NWMC again and one produced a bottle of Scotch. A guy took off paragliding and he went into the very low cloud. Wahta view all round. Descent was an airy descent of the NNE ridge again. Wow what a day and what a way to start the year.
