SKYE SUNSHINE

Date: 28-31 MAY 09
Submitted by: Keith Monaghan

Early Troone boat on Thur to Arrochar where Sandra k and PJ set off up the Cobbler, other Sandra and I climbed Ben Vane in the mist and rain, a long haul to Kyleaken via Fort William and a night in Saucy Marys sharing a room with 3 females all younger than myself! (Beat that one Mr Sec.)

Early start the next am and a walk in from Sligachan to the bottom of pinnacle ridge, on Sgurr nan Gillean. Bit cloudy but great fun with a few abseils before reaching the top in bright sunshine. A traverse onto Am Basteir and then down into a gully between the main top and the tooth looking for to Kings cave. (Required a bit of help route finding from a few fellas PJ and SK had befriended). They knew exactly where they were going and we eventually found the cave entrance and the ab off the side. With hardly a goodbye, PJ and SK then headed off with these fellas with much flicking of hair, silly smiles and coo cooing at the Russian marine. Sandra M and I climbed up to Bruach na Frithe.

A few beers and meal in Sligachan with a crowded campsite. No midges in good breeze thankfully, next for SM and I was a round of the Coire Lagan. Route up the great stone chute is to be avoided at all costs but once on the ridge and onto Sgurr Alastair we had superb views in bright sunshine and watched rescue heli lift some fella who fell around the TD gap and dislocated his shoulder. Great scrambling over Sgurr Thearlaich and around Collie’s ledge on Sgurr Mhic Chonnich to the In Pinn. Here we joined the 2 hour wait as a guide had taken a poor girl up the ridge and she became stuck.

Quite a strong wind on the In Pinn but a nice ab off and a walk out to Glen Brittle, Other 2 had a great day in and around the Cioch. Sunday was a short day and a climb up Bla Bheinn in 28 degrees of burning sunshine. Race back to Stranrear and the midnight boat home.

Rock warm, beer cold, crac mighty.
