Route Description:
Route 18,  The Miner's Way A superbly varied route, both in terms of terrain and scenery, possibly the best in the Sligo area. From Sligo follow the R284 to the village of Geevagh 837 168, turn left and park outside the GAA club. Return to theR284, turn left, and take the first left again to join the Miner's Way.  Soon the track becomes gravel and stone as it zig-zags it's was up the hill, passing St. Elva's grave on the right. An extended, but never too steep, 300m climb, finally leads to the top, where it joins a new windfarm road.  Turn left and follow the track, sometimes on bare rock to a fork at Gr 8755 1730,  where a short descent to the right is made, under an undercut cliff, with old mine workings in it.  This leads to more bare rock track, becoming a cart track, which joins the road at Gr 872 184.   Turn left on tarmac, and regain the hiil crest, before a long pleasent descent of about 4k to the cross roads at Tap 835 190.   Left again by Carrowcashel to an old farm cottage at the end of the track 843 188.  The boreen beside the cottage is blocked by an ancient abandoned tractor, but push past it and a couple of bushes beyond, and follow the boreen onto the forestry track.   This continues to a fork at  Gr 854 183, where the right hand, and mercifully downhill, option is chosen to join the minor road high above Geevagh.   Turn right and zoom down the hill, and back to the car.   The little pub in Geevagh is not to be missed (on the east side of the R284 with a Guinness sign outside).   It is a wonderfully original grocery bar, of a type rarely seen any more. 2.5 hours, mainly tracks and trails, Map 26, Distance 15k approx
